BEFORE YOU CONFIGURE

Measure for a useful first quotation.

Prepare initial dimensions, photographs and opening details for a steel window or door quotation, before the final survey.

3 minute read

Initial measurements help us price and discuss the design. Final manufacturing dimensions need a survey and an approved drawing.

Say what you have measured

The planner requests overall frame width and height in millimetres. If you only know the structural opening, enter the approximate dimensions and make that clear in the project notes. Tell us whether finishes, flooring or structural work are still to be completed.

Do not deduct a fitting allowance yourself and describe the result as a confirmed manufacturing size. The correct allowance, frame position and junction detail depend on the system, substrate and installation design.

Record the opening consistently

For a first discussion, record the width near the top, middle and bottom, and the height at the left, centre and right. Keep all readings and flag any differences. A photo with the measurements marked on it can prevent confusion between openings.

Give each item a clear location, such as “kitchen garden elevation” or “hall to sitting room”. Use that same label in your drawings and project list.

  • Take a straight-on photograph and one showing the surrounding wall.
  • Record the intended finished floor level and any internal or external step.
  • Describe the required opening direction and any nearby furniture, wall, radiator or access route.
  • For sliding or folding doors, show where the leaves should park and the space available.

What still needs a technical survey

Before manufacture, the responsible surveyor or installer needs to establish the final sizes, squareness, support, fixing conditions, access and installation details. Glass size and weight, hardware limits and the use of the room can affect the design.

A large opening may need several fixed or opening elements. The maximum size of a system component does not establish the permitted size of every finished window or door.

Prepare one complete project list

Add each different opening as a separate item, then adjust the quantity only for genuinely identical specifications. Choose advice required where the system or glazing is undecided.

The planner’s elevation is a visual reference for the discussion. It is not a fabrication drawing or a structural design. The final order follows the approved specification.
